RetroMUD - It's not just a game, it's an attitude!
RetroMUD is a community rich fantasy RPG game where you can socialize with other players from the comfort of your own home!
Best of all, RetroMUD uses very little bandwidth, which means you can play it from your phone or online when other members of your household are streaming videos.
RetroMUD features over 100 levels of play, a huge array of character advancement options, and dozens of quests across six different worlds. It's like six games in one. Best of all, it's FREE TO PLAY!
In the game use the command "guide" to summon (or dismiss) a newbie guide.
Your guide can do a lot of helpful stuff, like altering the light levels and teleporting you around.
The game might seem overwhelming at first, but we really hope that the newbie guide can make things easier for you while you learn the ropes.
This guide is maintained by fans of the game. We hope that it is useful to you and we would love to have any feedback you can give. The guide is intended to supplement an ingame tutorial and provide you with an easy reference to core game features.
You can dip in and out of the guide as you see fit. We know it's a lot of reading and we don't expect you to read everything before you start playing. If you're keen to get started quickly then download a client and jump into the game. We'll help you to figure stuff out as you go.
The Gameplay page introduces you to the basic commands that you'll use to play the MUD. The sub-pages under that page focus on adding more detail to specific areas.
There are three easy steps to follow:
Choose a client
Connect to the MUD
Create your character (see our guide)
Connecting to RetroMUD requires a mud client application. There are lots of free ones to choose from.
If you're on a desktop computer, you can download Mudlet.
If you're on a mobile device, you can try out Fado (Android)
You can tap here to play in your browser
There are lots of other options, but lets start with these just to keep things simple!
Now that you have a client, how do you actually connect?
The details that you need are:
host: retromud.org
port: 3000
See below for more details
You've connected! Now ask for help so that we can help you online with creating your perfect character
Press 'c' to create a new character and choose a name. This will start the process of creating a character.
Once you've chosen a name and password, use this command to get some help:
mentor Hello! I'd like some help
Download Mudlet from the official website: https://www.mudlet.org/
When you start Mudlet it will look like the image to the left. There are a bunch of pre-configured games listed, but we want to create a custom connection.
Press the "New" button that you will spot underneath the list of games.
Please also refer to the Mudlet manual if you are struggling (here).
After you have pressed the "New" button you will see a view similar to the left screenshot.
The profile name is just something for you to reference and you can call it anything you like.
For the server address you should enter retromud.org
For the port you should enter 3000
Now press "Connect"
An optional extra step is to edit your settings for RetroMUD.
The first thing I always do is check the option to "Auto clear the output line after you send text".
To do this select the "Options" menu and then the "Preferences" item.
You'll find this setting on the second tab which is labeled "input line".
You can also edit colours and font sizes in the preferences, to make things easier to read. I personally find some colours difficult to read so I make them brighter.
You can use the "mentor" channel in game to ask for help.
In game use the command "who helper" to find players who are keen to help you.
